Transportation Cabinet takes engineering into local school
Effort part of statewide ‘KEEN' program

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. – Employees of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet recently visited a local school to discuss their jobs and to introduce engineering concepts to students.

Personnel, including bridge engineer Joe Callahan from the Department of Highways District 9 office in Flemingsburg, visited East Carter Middle School 's Science Expo in May.

They discussed the different types of engineering, what kind of work they do for the highway department and how engineering affects students' lives. In addition, the students took part in a hands-on engineering-based activity about building arch bridges.

The school visit was part of the Kentucky Engineering Exposure Network (KEEN) program. Through it, engineers employed with the Cabinet visit schools throughout the state to discuss the applications of math and science in daily situations and the opportunities and challenges available to students in the field of engineering.

KEEN provides an opportunity for both the Cabinet and local schools to work together, and allows Transportation Cabinet engineers to contribute to education within their own communities. The KEEN program also follows many of the same concepts which are now required under Kentucky 's Education Reform Act. For more information, call toll-free (800) 817-2551.
