Resurfacing US 23 through Catlettsburg begins June 23
Lane closures expected during daytime hours
FLEMINGSBURG , Ky. – Contractors will begin paving US 23 through Catlettsburg on Monday, June 23, which means traffic restrictions along the busy four-lane highway next week and next month.
Mountain Enterprises Inc. received the $1.1 million contract in April for the 3.6-mile job, plus a half mile of paving on KY 966 ( Trace Road ).
The company will remove old pavement and apply new asphalt on US 23 in two sections, the first from 40 th Street in Ashland at the water plant to 55 th Street .
Plans are to pave the southbound lanes first, which means out-of-town traffic will be reduced to one lane during daytime work hours. Both lanes will reopen at night, although at times travel may be on rough surfaces.
Once that's finished, crews will switch to the northbound lanes with inbound traffic reduced to one lane. Again, all lanes will reopen at night.
Then, after a July 4 holiday break, paving will continue from the 55 th Street area to KY 3294 in Catlettsburg.
Care has been taken to minimize delays by closing only one lane at a time during paving operations. However, motorists should be prepared for longer drive times, especially in heavy traffic, and should plan routes accordingly.
Road work is subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists should slow down, “Drive Smart” in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment at all times.
