Transportation Cabinet promotes ‘common wealth ' of knowledge about Kentucky geography
Kentucky highway maps distributed to area schools

FLEMINGSBURG , Ky. – Rowan County Senior High School has received 250 surplus Kentucky highway maps.

Teachers Cindy Rhodes, Jim Brockman, Larry Slone, Peggy Jones and Tammy Collins-Bonney requested the maps as part of a statewide Kentucky Transportation Cabinet initiative to support geography, math, social studies, driver's education and other classes.

“These maps can become great resources to teach about places all across Kentucky , and learn about the routes that connect them,” said Transportation Secretary Joe Prather. “We're very excited about this opportunity to help thousands of young Kentuckians explore our great commonwealth from within their own classrooms.”

When the determination was made that there was a large supply of surplus maps, the Transportation Cabinet contacted Education Cabinet officials, who, in turn, invited school principals and teachers to e-mail their requests for maps to the Transportation Cabinet. The two cabinets partnered in a similar project in previous years, which involved the distribution of maps to elementary and middle schools.

Education leaders applaud the effort, saying teachers find many uses for the maps, and students gain practical knowledge from a reliable, well-produced reference tool.
