Snowfighters at work to keep roads safe
The forecast for Thursday night, February 4, through Sunday, February 7, seems to verify Pauxatawny Phil's prediction that we will have six more weeks of winter.
As of early afternoon Thursday, meteorologists' best estimates call for a wintry mix Thursday evening into Friday morning. Mostly rain, there are areas that could experience a little freezing rain or sleet. No accumulations south of a line from Mt. Sterling to Salyersville to Whitesburg.
However, places north of Whitesburg and Salyersville could receipt up to an inch of snow and a tenth of an inch of ice.
Travel may become hazardous tonight and tomorrow morning. Allow extra time to reach your destination if you have travel plans late tonight or early tomorrow morning.
Warm air Friday afternoon turns the preciptation to rain. An inch or more is possible by Friday evening. Due to the nearly saturated ground, most of the rain will run off into area creeks and streams. This may lead to some flooding problems and high water on area rivers.
Colder air filters back into the region on Friday night and Saturday as the storm system extends eastward. One to three inches of snow across Eastern Kentucky is possible by Saturday night.
